Its the second round of our Employee Spotlight series and we are happy to introduce you to Alyssa Tilk, our college intern, accounting assistant, and marketing whiz! Our employees are what truly make SoCo Tax a fun and unique place to work. There is really no better way to share about our team members other than by interviewing them and giving you insight into their inspirations, challenges, and what makes them tick. Meet Alyssa, a young and dynamic individual who has been with our company for about a year now.
Q. Before working at SoCo Tax, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
A. Before Working at SoCo I had pretty normal jobs within daycare and the food industry; however, one of the jobs I really enjoyed was working at a restaurant as a hostess where my brother was a server. We had a lot of fun and it was nice to have some of the same work friends.
Q. How do you balance your career and family?
A. Balancing my career at SoCo and spending time with family is not too difficult, as my schedule allows me to work a full day, and still come home afterwards and enjoy dinner and family time. As a student, I still live with my parents, who also work full time so it is nice to come home after the workday and discuss how each of our days were.
Q. If you could pick one theme for SoCo Tax to turn into a book about the company, what would it be?
A. A theme that would be suitable for SoCo would be something along the lines of coming together through hardships. The SoCo team is so supportive in all aspects of life. Whether it is work related or personal, everyone is always supportive and willing to help out when needed. The employees are motivated and everyone is always willing to pitch in and ask what they can do to help. When there is stress on one employee, another is there to offer a helping hand.
Q. What do you find the most challenging at SoCo?
A. Currently the most challenging part about working at SoCo is I am studying abroad in London, therefore communication is not as easy as it typically is when I am at home. The time change has made it difficult to join work meetings and discuss issues that are urgent. Thankfully, the team is accommodating and always finds time throughout the day to get back to me.
Q. What is on your wish list for the next 10 years with SoCo Tax?
A. As an intern at SoCo, my wish list is that the company is capable of preparing me for the workforce in the future. I hope that after I graduate, I will be comfortable in the business setting and I can use my experience to my advantage.
Q. Any random facts you could share with us?
A. I am a very spontaneous person. Most recently, I decided to buy tickets to visit Nice, France a week before I left. I never pass up opportunities to create lifelong memories. I feel very lucky to be at the age that I am and experiencing so much of the world. I take advantage of this to the best of my ability.
Q. Best vacation you’ve been to?
A. While I have been on many vacations, the one that will always be my absolute favorite was a family reunion I had in Up North, Michigan in 2014. All of my family gathered for the event at my uncle’s house on the Straits of Mackinaw, and it was the first time in years we could all make it. The house has the most beautiful view of the lake, and it’s impossible not to feel at peace when you are there.
Q. How do you define success?
A. I define success as setting a goal and doing everything you can in your power to reach this goal. Whether you achieve the outcome you had in mind or not, I believe as long as you are trying your best, you will be successful.
Q. If given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?
A. If I could be anyone for a day, it would be Elon Musk. I find him fascinating, and would love to experience what his life is like. 24 hours would be more than enough for me, though!
Q. If you could be anyone from any time period who would it be and why?
A. If I could be anyone from any time I would have to choose Stevie Nicks in 1977. This was the time that my favorite album, Rumours, was released and I could not imagine being a part of something that great. I would love to experience the emotions and thoughts she had during the process of creating such an impressive album.
Q. Any favorite line from a movie?
A. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” (Ferris Bueller’s Day off)
